Kayak Basics

Kayak Basics

Did you know that the term "kayak" means "hunter’s boat?" Kayaks were most often used in earlier days as a fisherman’s hunting device. The quietness of a kayak made it possible for early fishermen to sneak up on fish and harvest a healthy catch to bring home.

Kayaks come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They are made with all sorts of material as well. Today’s kayaks are generally made from aluminum frames and wood or a fabric cover. In contrast, earlier kayaks were made out of driftwood or whalebone, commonly found items in that day.

While kayaks were originally meant to be used for fishing purposes, their increased popularity has led to kayaks being used as a water sport. In addition, families often enjoy kayaking as a form of outdoor fun together.

How to Find the Best Kayak

When you’re ready to purchase your first kayak, there are several things you should consider. Instead of going out and buying the first one that looks the best, know that there are quite a variety of kayaks out there. Here are the main points to consider:

  • What body type are you? As you may have already learned, there are different shapes and sizes of kayaks. Different types are made differently, and not all are made to fit just any body type. Your size and height is something to consider when purchasing a kayak.

  • What type of kayak do you need? Just as there are many shapes and varieties of kayaks, there are different types of kayaks, too. An inflatable kayak is easy to transport from one place to another. A folding kayak provides flexibility in that it can easily be taken apart and folded for storage. Be sure to research all the types of  kayaks before making your purchase.

  • Will you kayak alone, or with a group? If you will kayak as a single person, then you are pretty much unlimited as far as choices go on what kind of kayak to buy. However, if you will be kayaking with your family or a group of friends, you have to take this into consideration. You’ll need a kayak that will accommodate two or more people.

Kayaking is a fun water sport that many people enjoy. Whether you are new to kayaking, or an advanced kayaker, you are sure to have lots of fun in the water. Remember to practice water safety when kayaking.
