Tips For Kayak Fishing

kayaking_with_Orca_podBecoming an expert at kayak fishing takes a while.  The time required for the novice to practice kayaking skills and fishing by kayak in order to turn into a veteran kayak fisherman can run into years.

About the nearest thing to a short cut is to have an experienced kayak fisherman (or fisherwoman) take you under his wing and have you accompany him on kayak fishing trips

Kayak fishing is gradually making a name in the fishing industry. Its popularity is steadily creating more and more enthusiastic kayak anglers, aside from the fact that kayaks have long been used in fishing.

From the kayak's early history as a hunting boat used by Eskimo and Indians of the Pacific Northwest  (United States), kayak fishing has been the primary source of fish supply - from the Halibut to Salmon and other types of big fish. These kayak fishing activities, which ocurred from the mid to late 18th century, were all noted by the Russian Orthodox priests who traveled to these areas to bring their religion to the natives. These turn of events are now known as "The Native History".

From then on, kayak fishing has continued to grow in popularity, where once people were doubtful if fishing by kayak could really be a productive fishing platform. The with the more stable features brought about by the sit-on-top kayak - stability has long been the primary characteristics of the original 'sit inside' kayak that made it an ideal fishing boat.

However, with kayak fishing the angler has to learn how to steady the kayak while paddling through the fishing grounds.  And kayaking skill becomes even more important when fighting a large fish you've hooked into.

Here are a few helpful kayak fishing tips  - kayaking advice that may help your kayak fishing adventures be far more enjoyable.

1. Kayak Safety first

Like any activity, it is necessary that before an individual plunges into action, he or she must first observe some safety measures ( including equipment and skillset checks) to ensure security and protection against any imminent danger.

The angler must check the weather condition, the tide, and other elements concerning kayaking.

It's best not to go kayak fishing alone, especially when you are learning the skills of the sport.  But if you do, always let people know where you are going kayak fishing and when you plan to return.  Leaving your fishing trip itinerary with family and friends, along with identifying features of your kayak and your even your vehicle is a smart safety backup.

2. Kayak hatches should be closed at all times

The kayak angler should always keep in mind that it is best to keep the hatches closed while fishing. Water can rigged_fishing_kayak_small.jpgnever seep through the kayak if the hatches are kept closed.   This is especially important when fishing from the more typical 'sit inside' kayaks.  And closed hatches are a must when launching a kayak from the beach for an ocean fishing trip.  The sit on top kayaks do have scuppers that will drain away most water that enters the boat while kayaking.  But it's still a good idea to keep the gear hatches closed so your equipment and supplies stay dry.

3. Steady kayak fishing

When the kayak angler is out on the water, it is better to have an anchor to keep the kayak steady while on the verge of catching fish.   An anchor for a kayak can be similar to a typical boat anchor, but smaller and lighter of course.  But an even better anchor choice would be a sea anchor - a funnel shaped design made out of fabric that when pulled behind the kayak will catch the flow of water in its 'funnel' and therby cause significant drag to slow or stop the kayak.  These sea anchors are also excellent to use when caught in high winds or other situations where you cannot paddle, yet do not want to move off your location or course.

Best of all, before an individual goes out on the water it would be better if he let somebody know his whereabouts. In this way, somebody will be able to keep track of your activity.

As they say, safety should always come first.   And with kayak fishing, it's especially true.
